Summary

A woman loses her child and proceeds to go completely insane. The reader follows the thoughts of Charlotte, a mother grieving for her stillborn baby, who proceeds to try and bring back her baby.

Style

Thomas normally writes psychological thrillers, namely Hex and Echo, but Dolores is quite different. It is a thriller, yes, and it does get your mind going, but Dolores is more poetical than his two other books. A combination of rhyme, suspense and a stream of consciousness pulls the reader into the mind of the mother. Furthermore, it gives the book a chaotic, uneasy feeling.

Understandably, this style won’t be compelling to everyone, but I loved it and read through the book in a breeze. After finishing and closing the book it left me with a feeling of disbelief and confusion, which is highly positive!

Recommendation

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Nevertheless, I should mention a few reasons which might make you consider not reading this book:
– If you are not a fan of thrillers, suspenseful or chaotic stories.
– If you are a grieving mother yourself (my sincere condolences if you are), or a mother of a newborn.

But! Reasons to absolutely give reading Dolores a try:
– If you have read Hex and/or Echo and adore Thomas’s writing.
– If you are a fan of Stephen King’s writing.
– Or if you just want to read it.

Dolores Dolly Poppedijn fully deserves 5 stars!
